Tropical Squeeze

Can anyone share their experiences with juice fasts? I am beginning a ten day juice fast tomorrow ?

To purge my soul of its demons and addictions, which I have been slowly warding off over the last couple months, I am building up the momentum of my soul to carry me through the difficult months ahead. I hope for the juice fast to solidify these changes in my life and put me in touch with the spiritual world again.

Without protein and carbohydrates your body will become weaker very quickly, factor that that into your thinking. i.e. no extremes of physical exertion (at home or at the gym).

You may get head-aches for the first couple of days while your body is detoxifying. Its normal – try and sleep through it and drink more water, it goes away soon enough.

Recommendation: Have a non-fasting trusted friend monitor your behavior. If you start to get spacey / irrational, etc. then eat some real bread or something to strengthen yourself. Your body will adjust to the juices, but going cold-turkey the first time out can be rough.

From the religious point of view – fasting and prayer drives out demons as we read in the Scriptures, but too much fasting kills the body; this is NOT the intent of fasting! Keep everything in moderation.

Orthodox Christian fasting is a little less extreme though it goes on for longer (about 40 days) for Christmas and Pascha (Easter) Lenten times.

We try to avoid:
1) Sin (i.e. its no good to fast from food, if you’re going to take it out on everyone around you by being irritable)
2) Meat
3) Dairy
4) Eggs
5) For Great Lent (before Pascha) we also do away with Fish & Oil
6) Using the above restrictions we also try to eat less than we normally do. To the point of being full, never quite getting to full – is the goal (very hard to do if you like to eat).

So we get our veggies, nuts, and a lot of boiled and pickled food to boot. Soy, Veggie and Pasta is very prevalent.

The reason why I mention this is that it’s safer than going completely without solid food for 10 days and you still gets you the same results. Something to think about – believe you me – you’ll be challenged trying to follow the Orthodox fasting rules!
